They're too preachy... They've always done politics, satire and parodies, but more subtly. They would integrate current affairs into a story, it was clever. Now it just feels like M and T are trying to 'educate' the world toward their opinions.

I think that while alot of the earlier episodes are classics I really enjoyed season 10. Infact I think I like more episodes in that season than any other. I think season 11 needs a bit of pepping up but still, its all good :)

for me, the 1st few seasons of south park where good, but i think i was laughing more at the fact that they where kids being rude and the initial shock of it all, but the later ones are more about the jokes and the shock of what theyre about rather than just the language...if you get me, well the point is i prefer the later seasons, especially 10, marvelous! :D and 11 has been good! alot of the SP fans i know quote season 11 more to me than season 10, its always "come own kelleh!" and "NO I DONT HAVE ANY CHANGE!" thats what i think about it allllll 8)

i don't hate the new episodes i just think that they have been making fun of real events alot and they kind of too scientific. But like i said i think that the old ones are better than the new but what i'm saying right now is my opinion so RESPECT THAT!

I wrote this on another message board and thought it might be better suited on a south park board.
I'm not asking for flames, but I just feel like this should be posted. Please prove me wrong if you can. This is from a thread about the new episode (Le Petit Tourette)

...a few episodes of the last season were actually quite good, but a few things have really ruined south park. One of south park's strengths was its crude animation, celebrity face cut-outs and the like. i've noticed that with superior animation and detail the show has lost its flair; it visibly seems like matt and trey are working much harder on the visual component of the show than its content, something they have actually spoken out on separate occasions and episodes. another is with the storylines of the show; they try too hard to fit everything in with pop culture nowadays, and some of it just falls flat, with the show's writers mistaking references to current events and celebrities as jokes, forsaking nearly all nuances of character development. In addition, most stories cut out Kenny altogether now, who was a great asset of the show, and the rest of the boys seem to just be watered-down versions of what they used to be for the sake of moving on the plot and carrying a nice message, something south park barely bothered with in its prime. For example, cartman has completely lost his diabolicalness and intelligence in his antics: in this new episode [along with other new ones] cartman seems to be malevolent simply to be the antagonist carrying no further motive; he has become a thoroughly uninteresting character in contrast to the cartman of "Scott Tenorman Must Die" or "Kenny Dies". Overall, I just wish matt and trey would make somewhat of a return to their original style, but that's out of my control, and since they think the show is progressing in their mind anyway, it's kind of irrelevant. Just putting my thoughts out there.

What the hell are you making a retarded post like that for? I think all of MJB's criticisms are valid, and ones I agree with myself, except for the point about animation. I don't think the writing has taken TOO much of a hit due to the animation. It is possible to have something look fairly nice - the show is still a touch crude that way, ie. walk cycles - and be written well in addition to that. I can understand longing for the past animation, and while it did get the story across fairly nicely, they could have done it better. And now they have. Times have changed since South Park came on-air, so new technologies have come out that enable them to give the show a bit of a nicer look without completely losing the style. Besides, the show really DID start off as a little bland and boring, in terms of both writing and animation... both have improved. Whether writing is on the decline is up for debate, but, yeah, I prefer the new animation.

I think Matt and Trey have backed themselves into a corner in the pop culture/current events situations these days. They've done it so much that people just expect it from them - I've seen that here, on this board, whenever somebody makes a new episode suggestion, very often it's because something big just happened in the news. Not much of a suggestion in terms of characters and what they can do that would be funny and stuff, but a suggestion that South Park should parody this one thing that just happened. I recall before Two Days came out, Matt and Trey mentioned that they felt like they HAD to do a Hurricane Katrina episode. So yeah, they backed themselves into a corner on that one, and occasionally they'll emerge from that corner, but it doesn't seem to be happening as often nowadays.

Character usage bugs me the most about the show now... It just used to be about the four boys, and then, in last night's episode, Stan - Stan! - didn't get a single line. I'm used to Kenny barely even appearing but I'm weirded out that Stan never said a damn thing. It's great to only use the characters that you need for a story, but really... Try to throw in some other scenes, don't make it a solely Cartman vs. Kyle thing (Ginger Kids? That involved Stan/Kyle/Kenny vs. Cartman), and just... use your characters better. They're great to have when they're crucial to the plot but really... They can be used for more than that, and I wish they would be.

Nevertheless, I still do really like the show despite any criticisms I may have with it, as last night's episode finally got me really back into it.

Great post.

I agree that as South Park goes on, it's becoming more and more different from it's original conception in terms of animation, comedy etc. Regardless, the newest episode was very funny and the story was very well told. Definately a top episode, IMO.

New run, new thread about how the crappy animation of old is better than the new smoother animation, and how the stories are more current-event driven than character driven. Happens every six months.

Quote:
cartman seems to be malevolent simply to be the antagonist carrying no further motive

That's how he was in the first four years of the show.

nuances of character development

What do you expect? The boys are still in 4th grade after seven years. I don't expect much character development if they're not moving on to 5th grade.

Yeah, I definitely agree with that 100%. They even like to do the classic "boys being boys" thing on South Park, but it's like they just feel obligated to do the whole pop culture reference thing.

It seems the writers have writers' block. They just do the same formula. Cartman has idea/prank/plan that's offensive to all. It just reminded me too much of when Cartman was pretending to be retarded so he can rig the Special Olympics. Kyle is against Cartman's plan, and will either try to reason with him or ignore him all together. Cartman's plan backfires and either Cartman looks like a douchebag in the end or he gets off the hook.

Can they come up with anything better?
"Six words Lisa, 'I'm not gay, but I'll learn.'" Homer Simpson

"How do you speak my language?" Adam West

"This job would be great if it weren't for the f*cking customers." Randall; Clerks

What are you guys talking about?

The early episodes were terrible with a couple jokes to spare.

Season 1 was an atrocity.
Season 2 had perhaps one good episode.
Season 3 was "nice improvement, but needs more."
Season 4 was getting up there.
Season 5 turned the show around.
Season 6 improved season 5's improvements.
Season 7 brought forth the awesome hilarity.
Season 8 totally took it to the top and made it one of the finest shows on television.
Season 9 did the same.
Season 10 improved humor for season 8 and 9.
Season 11 took the cake.
What's the difference between a 7-11 and a smurf?

A 7-11 is a 24-hour convenience store and a smurf is a small blue fictional cartoon character.
